"My Bloody Valentine"~Written by Ben Edlund. Directed by Mike Rohl. Starring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Lex Medlin, and James Otis.
Ben Edlund and Mike Rohl should teach a class on blood, gore, and how to make a TV episode look and feel like a horror movie.
This episode was gross. Between the bites, blood, boxes of flesh, and the ingestion of raw meat, I couldn't decide which was worse. This episode is terrific!
Edlund knows Supernatural and it's fans. Ben Edlund must know that Castiel (Misha Collins) + cell phone + Dean (Jensen Ackles) = TV at its best. Castiel and Dean's telephone banter is what Supernatural magic dust is made of. Dean and Castiel's chemistry has been electrifying from the moment the angel walked into that barn and the writers know it. Misha Collins has been a wonderful addition to the show. The intelligent and peculiar actor truly has a hold on his character and it's all good for us and the show.
Fans are introduced to Cupid (Lex Medlin). He's a cherub. He's big, cuddly, and adorable in a very disturbing way. He is also strangely lovable. His "handshake" leaves Sam, Dean, and Castiel in speechless confusion and revulsion.
Edlund's vision for this episode reads like a season one episode of Supernatural, back when the show was just the right mix of funny, sexy, and scary. Famine (James Otis) is a formidable opponent whose presence illicits the humans in his company to divulge in acts that feed their hunger: food, flesh, love, drugs... Even Castiel's vessel, Jimmy becomes Famine's subject, binging on White Castle burgers. Jimmy's hunger for red meat is humorous until it turns grotesque. Thank you Mr. Edlund, you're amazing!
James Otis seems to channel a certain Emperor from the famous Star Wars universe and it works. Famine is frail. He appears to need an oxygen tank and is carried by his minions onto a wheelchair. His pallor is yellow and his teeth are decaying. It's all so dramatic and absolutely perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing James Otis again.
The Winchesters are not immune to Famine's powers. I enjoy Jared Padalecki's acting. Nevertheless, the actor has a weakness. Jared is good when the character is active, being physical or being emotionally driven towards a target. When the writing is building or developing his character, Padalecki's concentration wanders and his acting becomes loose and muddled. Padalecki is back on target here in this episode, especially in a scene that requires repeat viewing. In a rage of thirst, the actor instantly produces a jaw dropping, downright scary and sexy scene. The momentum continues throughout the episode. It's what Padalecki needs to do more often.
Jensen Ackles' weakness is that he can't seem to deliver a one dimensional performance. His character almost seems too multifaceted, overly layered, and so intricate that fans wonder if Dean Winchester was initially written to be so confounding. Ackles can't seem to stop emoting, yes this is a complaint. I don't always have the time to analyze you Mr. Ackles! Famine wreaks havoc upon everyone in his presence except for Dean, or so we are made to believe. But Sam is right from the beginning and upon retrospect, Jensen Ackles delivers another episode where he shows off his artistry of envisioning an episode in its entirety.
Ackles does most of the arduous and emotional weight lifting in "My Bloody Valentine". The final scene is proof of that. Nevertheless, the actor handles these moments with such care and precision. He's brilliant. The final scene in the junkyard still resonates with me.
