(Warning: Talk of Season six of Supernatural. There will be much gushing and congratulating ahead)
CW/SPN promo season 6
And the winner is: Jensen Ackles. He's the one with the halo.
Fans have spoken, it took months of voting, but we have a winner. Jensen Ackles has won the fan voted TV Guide Poll for Favorite Actor. Are we surprised here? NO. The fans have spoken and it seems like Supernatural fans are the loudest.
I first noticed Jensen Ackles on the daytime drama Days of Our Lives, where I dismissed him as another pretty boy. But Jensen has shown time and time again to be a good actor and brilliant storyteller. From Ben and Alec in Dark Angel to his turn in Smallville as Jason, to Dean Winchester, the character he was born to play, Jensen has grown into an artist worthy of his craft. I’ve called Mr. Ackles an artist before in this blog and it’s a term that I honestly believe he’s entitled to. Ever since his character of Ben (Dark Angel), the disturbed, tortured, violent, and psychologically irreparable X5, Jensen has been diligently applying his special brew of technique to his acting. Is it Method, Meisner, or Classical? It must be a mixture. He’s vehemently aware of his fellow actors, his blocking and his props. He seems to live his character, but only when the camera rolls and perhaps a few minutes after. There have been stories of a worked up Mr. Ackles after stressful scenes, but he uses his passion to his advantage. Mr. Ackles is also acutely aware of the physicality of his characters. All of his characters are approached differently, from the tilt of his head, to the speed of his reactions, to the timber of his voice.
I’m going to take this time to address something that has troubled me for quite some time. When I first stumbled upon the Supernatural fandom, I came upon a few fans, some of whom didn’t think Jensen gave enough in the earlier episodes of season 1. They didn’t think Dean “reacted” enough to other characters, or the supernatural, or to various other things: visuals, or sounds. This is my theory. Jensen Ackles was playing Dean, the older brother. He wasn’t playing Sam. Dean didn’t have the advantage of living a semi normal life for a few years in a top college (Stanford). Dean didn’t have the opportunity to live with a lovely girl-friend like Jessica for years. Dean isn’t normal; he’s traumatized, not just by being a hunter, but because he has witnessed his mother’s death by fire. Dean watched his father descend into an abyss and Dean remembers his father rise from the ashes as a hunter. Dean remembers his father being sweet and kind and just being “Daddy.” When I look back at Jensen's acting in the Pilot and the earlier episodes, I see a Dean Winchester who has been locked away for most of his life. He’s shredded his innocence and has surrendered himself to his father’s ideals of hunting. Most of his social skills are feigned. He pretends to fit into a society when the need calls for it, but fails miserably at times. That is what I see in Dean Winchester, his reactions shouldn’t be normal, far from it. Dean has been with his father while Sam was away at Stanford. That must have been draining and disturbing. Instead of reacting with fear or surprise, Dean had a tendency to react with intent, with the knowledge of a hunter and the desperate need to take down the supernatural. Mr. Ackles has always reacted in character.
I’m happy with the results. Jensen Ackles has been devoted to the craft of acting, diligently analyzing his scenes and incorporating his own ideas for six seasons on Supernatural. Season six has been different in my opinion. Jensen's acting has been more refined, boarding on technique deserving of a stage. His awareness has grown horrifyingly precise, understanding the script and his surroundings to a science. Mr. Ackels also seems to be over extending himself, by finding the nuances in the writing and using the lighting, blocking, and camera angles to his advantage.
Jensen Ackles is the soul of Supernatural. He’s been holding the pieces of an experimental season together. The actor has had to balance out the characters of SoulLessSam, Castiel and his secretive actions, and the dour Campbells. The actor has had to weave together an inundation of plot points from a twisted fantasy vampire episode, to being the voice of reason between Castiel and SoulLessSam, to becoming an intrepid detective.
Dean Winchester has been the show’s beating heart for most of season six. The Campbells were lying, Sam wasn’t really Sam, and Bobby didn’t know about the Campbells or Sam. Castiel has been occupied with greater issues. In season six Dean has been the only character with a clean heart, and a clear mind, devoid of any treachery.
Overwhelming, enchanting, and perhaps underestimated, Jensen has been a pleasure to watch this season.
Since we are being casual here…
This is just a fanblog. Celebrity Hollywood Connection is the blog of the husband and wife team of Max and Louisa. Yes, I do most of the talking here, but almost all points written in this blog have been discussed over coffee in the morning, walks by the beach, dinner, and hot tea at night.
Supernatural opened a pathway in our relationship that never existed before. Supernatural is the first show Max and I have discussed and argued over. Ever. There hasn’t been a day that we haven’t mentioned something about Supernatural since we started watching the show since it’s first season. I started out enthralled with John Winchester. Max has always been and still is a Dean Winchester fan. We even have fun debates on whom is the better actor, Jeff vs. Jensen and if you have read our blog on "On The Head of A Pin", you know what happened. The entire cast is wonderful and lovable. Castiel is just so much fun to watch, while Misha is brazen and beautiful. Bobby is the best hunter in the SPN universe, the very handsome and multi-talented Jim Beaver is just amazing. Jim Beaver is not only an amazing actor, he’s also an excellent writer. I can’t imagine anyone else playing Bobby Singer. Sexy Jared Padalecki has grown up right in front of us, watching him bring life into Sam Winchester, Meg, Lucifer, and SoulLessSam has been a roller coaster ride and we’ve had a blast.
When it comes to Mr. Ackles, there’s so much to say…
Max hasn’t had a favorite TV actor since the 80s. Yes, he still likes those actors, but there hasn’t been a TV actor that has sparked his attention since then. Then Jensen Ackles came along. Jensen is the reason why I was dragged into a movie theater coughing, sneezing, and running a fever. Max had to watch My Bloody Valentine and watch it we did. We enjoyed it immensely and strangely, I enjoy it more every time I watch it on DVD. The director/writer commentary is worth the DVD buy alone.
I rambled, but I just couldn’t help myself.
Congratulations Jensen Ackles!!!
Coming up soon: I'll be reviewing "PASSENGER" the series, created by Al Galvez. Here is a snippet of the show.
